Murphy, Our School Therapy Dog

Murphy was introduced to our school in April 2019 when he was just 3 months old. He has been coming into school for 2 mornings a week ever since and has grown up alongside the pupils, giving him the opportunity to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of us all! The children have seen him grow, learn how to behave and helped to teach him the manners he needs to be a part of Newbald.

A lot of research and planning went into the decision to introduce a school therapy dog to our school but our aim has always been to benefit the children educationally, emotionally and to increase their understanding of responsibility. Therapy dogs can help children with their reading, improve social development and support them through difficult periods of their lives. We have already seen the benefits Murphy has brought to our school and the ongoing reading groups are helping children overcome their anxieties and help build confidence. Murphy will continue with his training for several years to ensure we can support pupils in many ways.

Murphy loves coming in to school and more importantly, the pupils and staff love having him as part of the Newbald team.

Helping Children Read

Inspiring children to have fun and enjoy the experience of reading.  We are following the Bark and Read Foundation, reading initiative through the Kennel Club. Evidence shows, if children are partnered with a dog to read to, the dog provides comfort, encourages positive social behaviour, enhances self esteem and motivates speech.

it is accepted that interacting with animals is not appropriate for all children but that for some it has the potential to provide many positive benefits.  Any parents who don't want their child to interact with Murphy can inform the school office at any time.
